Menopause and COVID-19
The doctors and midwives at GNH have been helping patients through this transition for their entire careers.
Thankfully, this is one of the services that we can easily continue via telemedicine.
We will discuss your health history, your family history and your current symptoms.
Generally an exam is not even necessary.
Together, we will make a plan to help you through this difficult time.
Here is some general information to consider:
Menopause is an enormous transition in a woman’s life that can affect her both physically and mentally. The human body has estrogen receptors in many different places, and a woman may experience a wide variety of symptoms because of this. Most symptoms are tolerable and can be managed with simple measures at home and at work. If symptoms become overwhelming or unmanageable, your doctor can help.
Approximately 80% of women will experience hot flashes and night sweats (vasomotor symptoms) and sleep disturbances. Many treatments exist for these complaints, including over the counter, naturopathic remedies such as Estroven ® and Relizen ®. For severe or disruptive symptoms, however, prescription medications can provide significant relief. These medications include hormone and non-hormone medications that can be discussed with your doctor.
Vaginal dryness is another bothersome symptom that can cause intercourse to become uncomfortable. Replens ® is a vaginal moisturizer that can be helpful along with the use of lubricants for intercourse. If these measures are not helpful, there are many new and innovative treatments that are highly effective and can be discussed with your provider. Topical estrogen is commonly prescribed, comes in many different forms, and is extremely safe (despite package warnings).
It is also worth discussing with your doctor heart and bone health as well as any urinary issues that may arise. If there is a family history of osteoporosis or other risk factors, bone density screening can be done before age 65 to see if treatment is needed. Underlying risks and family history of heart disease should also be carefully examined and addressed.
Weight gain, loss of muscle, and joint pain are frequently bothersome to menopausal women as well. These changes can be extremely frustrating for women who no longer feel themselves. The best way to address these symptoms and maintain good health is to eat a well balanced diet and to continue to get regular exercise. Walking is an ideal way to maintain fitness, and should be done on a daily basis if possible. It is good for your bones, joints, metabolism, and heart. Light weight lifting will also help maintain strength, and people can build muscle at any age!
Finally, some women may notice mood alterations as they transition through menopause. If you are feeling overly anxious or depressed, or if any of your symptoms are too much to manage on your own, make a telemedicine appointment. There are so many options available nowadays to help women transition into menopause and feel well. It is a very liberating stage of life for women, and your gynecologist is here to help you make the most of it.
